"Nation, gender and the killing of an Indian journalist"

GWS congratulates Shwetha Delanthamajalu on her recent article, which was awarded The Znaniecki Published Paper Award by the Department of Sociology.  Delanthamajalu is a graduate student in Sociology and will be working for Gender and Women's Studies next year as a teaching assistant.   

"Using a transnational and postcolonial lens, the author examines representations of nation and gender in newspaper coverage of the murder of a prominent Indian journalist, Gauri Lankesh, in September 2017. Her analysis reveals that both media circulate representations reminiscent of transnational discourses that rationalize political projects in the name of saving women or, in this case, saving journalists. While both media present different narratives of the murder and its aftermath, they both downplay its gendered implications."
